Young Economists' Conference

A whole-day Virtual Economics conference aimed at Year 12 students from various local schools. There were 5 sessions, including: 3 talks with Q&A with speakers on Finance, Behavioural Economics and Natural Capital/Comprehensive Wealth; a workshop where students were asked to produce a video or poster in small groups; and a careers panel with speakers who talked about university and job applications related to Economics.

Aims

To provide a learning opportunity for students from Dulwich College and other partner schools.

To encourage further educational study of Economics.

Background

Two of the Thinking About... webinars held this year focused on Economics, and both were very popular. on the back of this we invited students from SSLP schools to join us by entering mixed school teams in the Cambridge Easter Festival.

We had a good response for this, and a lot of fun, so decided to run a one day conference at the end of the academic year.

Being an online event our capacity was greatly increased so we extended the invitation to non-SSLP schools including Bromley High School GDST, Headington School, Highgate School, KES Stratford, La Retraite RC Girls' School, Northwood College for Girls GDST, Sherborne School, Tonbridge School, UCS Hampstead and Wycombe High School.

Resources

No costs were incurred with this event as it was held virtually. The Head of Economics spent an additional 7 hours emailing partner schools in advance of the conference to encourage attendance.

The Head of Economics also spent 7 hours supervising the online element of the sessions and had other staff supervising the students.

The recordings of all the sessions have been made available on the SSLP website.

Impact

An anonymous feedback survey was sent out after the event to all participants. The feedback from students has been very positive.

Pupil Involvement

This conference was aimed at Year 12 students, however year 11 students also participated.

93 students from Dulwich College.

234 students from other schools.
