Year 5, Primary School Enrichment Programme
King's College runs an enrichment programme for the Year 5 cohort at Holy Trinity Primary School designed to complement their curriculum and to inspire and enrich their pupils.
Aims
The aim of this Enrichment Programme is to provide 6-sessions over the period of a year to help to inspire Holy Trinity's Year 5 cohort, offering activities which extend and complement their curriculum. The need was identified in conjunction with the primary school's SMT as to how to help inspire their pupils outside of their immediate surroundings and to help develop their sense of awe, particularly after COVID.
Background
The partnership and suggestion came about after King's offered the Enrichment Programme as part of its community outreach and desire to partnership with local schools. This programme started in September 2023. It has been exceptionally well-received and will become a rolling programme.
Resources
The Enrichment sesssions use the specialist teaching resource and facilities at King's. For example, the theatre, the DT worshop, science labs and sports facilities. The sessions are led by King's teachers, suported by technicians and sometimes with the support of its pupils, such as sports scholars, also.
The sessions have generally lasted for a minimum of 90 minutes and involved a carousel of hands-on, engaging activities.
The sessions are provided free of charge to Holy Trinity.
Impact
Incredibly positive feedback from the enrichment sessions that have taken place this year and the impact that they have had on the pupils at Holy Trinity, particularly in their outlook and aspirations for the future. For example, from one Year 5 teacher:
"It has been an absolute pleasure to work closely with Kings this year on their enrichment programme for our children at Trinity. The children would never have had the experiences that have been offered this year without the generosity shown by the staff at Kings. The specialist staff (and the number of staff) have made such an impact on the children. Having four specialist DT teachers for a group of twenty children means the quality of learning that the children have received is unmatched.
Children have mentioned these experiences throughout the year. For example, in a discussion about future careers, one of the girls discussed how she would like to consider a career in Science after her experience at Kings - she loved the smaller details such as getting to wear the lab coats to 'feel' like a scientist.
It has been truly delightful to see children with SEND, who find the classroom environment challenging at times, absolutely thrive in the practical activities that have been offered. I think it has been really carefully considered by King's to offer the children experiences they wouldn't have the opportunity to take part in otherwise. Such as performing Greek Chorus work in a theatre, under the lights; completing experiments involving fire in the Science labs and using equipment such as drills and saws in a DT room."
Pupil Involvement
For the Cricket Enrichment Session, sports scholars from the Sixth Form planned and ran the activities under the supervision of our Head of Cricket. A DT scholar helped with the DT session.
Frequency
After the success of this Enrichment Programme in its first year, the intention is for it to be ongoing on a yearly rolling programme.
