Year 5 Maths Challenge
SHS host a Year 5 Maths Challenge where pupils from different primary schools in the area come together to solve a series of mathematical code breaking puzzles.
Throughout the afternoon, pupils will be working on their mathematical skills as a team (of up to 5 pupils) competing against other teams to win prizes.
Aims
To provide an opportunity for MAT students to explore their mathematical skills in a fun and interactive way
To allow pupils from local schools to compete in a maths challenge
Background
Following a conversation with schools who took part in our Outreach Programme, they asked for opportunities for pupils to explore, stretch and extend their mathematical skills.
We have run a similar event previously, but not on the scale of this new event with the opportunities for so many schools to take part. We established this event in 2023.
Resources
We run the event on the school site using our Maths Department as the facilitators.
The competition runs for two hours with the opportunity for up to 18 teams of 5 pupils to take part.
The event was so popular when launched, we will be running it twice a year (once in the Autumn and once in the Summer Term) to allow all the schools who wish to take part to participate.
Impact
At the end of the Academic Year, we ask all the schools who take part in our Outreach Programme for feedback using the WWW(What Went Well) and EBI (Even Better If) framework.
Feedback on the day was overwhelming positive from both the Teachers and pupils who took part.
Pupil Involvement
Pupils taking part are in year 5 (boys and girls) and with the exception of our own girls, they are all from local state primary schools.
Frequency
The event will be held twice a year due to the popularity and is planned to continue indefinitely.
