Year 10 / 11 GCSE Art Workshop

As part of our ongoing commitment to helping students prepare their applications for art school, we offer a workshop for girls in Year 10 and 11 taking GCSE Art, who are planning to take Art A Level / BTEC and wish to pursue a career in the art world.

The workshop takes place during Shrewsbury High School’s Annual Art Exhibition at Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery. The workshop is in the Education Room at the Museum.

The workshop is led by our Head of Creative Technologies, and the theme of the day is “portraiture skills".

Aims

To allow girls to explore and develop their portraiture skills in a safe and encouraging environment learning new skills and techniques.

To support the development of portfolio pieces for inclusion in any art school application.

Background

This is part of the Annual Shrewsbury High School Art Exhibition at Shrewsbury Art Gallery and Museum. It is a long standing tradition to offer the opportunity to our KS4 students and some places are reserved for Outreach.

The event has been running for a number of years.

Resources

We use the Education Room at the Museum which we hire in addition to the main Exhibition space.

The Art Department run the day with support from the Outreach Lead.

We ask every student (internal and external) to pay £10 towards the costs (room hire, materials, packed lunch, etc.).

Impact

After the event, we ask for feedback from the attendees using the WWW (What Went Well) and EBI (Even Better If) framework.

Pupil Involvement

There are 15 places each year with a rough split of 50:50 for Internal and Outreach.

Pupils are in Year 10 or 11 and planning to take Art at KS5.

The workshop is for girls only.

Frequency

The event runs once a year in December on the Sunday of the Art Exhibition weekend.
