Wycliffe Junior Squash Club
Wycliffe Junior Squash Club
The Wycliffe Junior Club was started by the one of the first Directors of Squash 25 years ago to give young people in the community an opportunity to learn and play squash in a competitive and fun environment.
Aims
The aim of this programme is to firstly provide access to specialist squash coaches and equipment to local children, with the intention of promoting the game of Squash. Secondly, we want to inspire children to start playing local tournaments and become comfortable in a competitive environment and grow the numbers of people playing squash in the Gloucestershire community.
Resources
Our Assistant Coach of Wycliffe College leads the sessions and is helped by some of the older players, members of the Elite Squash Programme, and local squash coaches. These players have the opportunity to gain valuable experience in coaching young children and furthering their knowledge by doing an England Squash Level 1 coaching course. The club has access to Wycliffe's four newly refurbished courts. The College also provides racquets, glasses, balls and other equipment needed throughout the sessions. The sessions are staffed by Wycliffe employed coaches.
Impact
This programme has had a positive impact; the Junior Club has seen a few successful players come through the programme and go on to join Wycliffe College’s Elite Squad. They have then gone on to play England Squash Gold/Silver events and get higher rankings within the country. One player started off at the Club and progressed to be European Champion. Players are encouraged to play local tournaments (e.g. Cadbury Tournament, Wycliffe Junior Open, East Glos Open etc.) Some of our members are encouraged to play in the Southwest Club championships in Exeter.
Frequency
During term time, there are 2 sessions every Wednesday evening. U11’s play from 6-7pm, and the Over 11’s & Intermediate Abilities are from 7-8pm. There are approximately 35 members of the club, both male and female, aged from 5-18 years old
