Workshops

Mayfield School hosts a number of useful workshops throughout the year, inviting pupils from local schools to attend.

The Drama department of Mayfield School has been busy sharing expertise, training and theatrical opportunities with local State Schools. It organised and provided two day workshops for local Drama teachers, run by students and staff. The participants from Hazelwick School in Crawley, Mid-Kent College, Maidstone, and St Augustine Academy and St Gregory’s School, both in Tunbridge Wells, used the Drama Studio and other school facilities. Head of Drama at Mayfield, commented that the contacts made with colleagues working in other schools and the opportunity to share good practice were very valuable.

Local pupils from Mayfield Primary School were invited to performances throughout the year. They enjoyed the atmospheric and ingenious 3-hander ‘Tales from Anderson’ performed by our ‘A’ level students, which prompted plenty of creative writing back in the classroom. The oldest pupils have been invited to a performance of ‘Lord of the Flies’ with an all-female cast, similar to the controversial Theatre Clwyd/Sherman Theatre production earlier in the year.

Annually, the PE department host children from Mayfield Primary School who take part in a variety of sports activities - including 45 minute sessions of athletics, hockey and dance.

Mayfield School’s Maths Enrichment Day, designed for year 10s to encourage them to think about studying Maths and further Maths at A level, was a ‘inspirational’ occasion according to the participants. 37 students from local State Schools (Beacon School, Crowborough; Uckfield College; Heathfield Community College, and St Gregory’s School in Tunbridge Wells) attended a carousel of workshops, before having lunch with Mayfield pupils. One of Mayfield’ school minibuses collected the pupils from Heathfield at no charge, enabling them to take part in the day. The activities culminated in a talk from Ben Sparks: ‘the creation of Number’. Ben is an entertaining Mathematician (and Musician) who works with the Advanced Maths Support Programme and delivers his stimulating and original talks all over the world.

58 students from local school and their teachers attending an A-Level Maths conference with Workshops led by AMSP and Mayfield Mathematics teaching staff. Workshops were focused on problem solving tasks, mathematics in industry and preparation for university testing.
