WGS Sports Leaders

Senior School students at Wolverhampton Grammar School are currently training for their Level 1 Sports Leaders' qualification and have been delivering events for local school under the Wolverhampton Schools' Partnership.

The School hosted an Indoor Athletics competition for sixty Year 5 and 6 pupils from WGS and 3 local primary schools in November 2022. In January, a Multi-Skills event was hosted for fifty Year 1 and 2 pupils from WGS and 3 other schools, focusing on agility, balance, and coordination. In total 19 Year 9 WGS students were involved in the delivery of the project supported by Sports Staff.

Aims

The project aims are to increase the number of children taking part in physical activity and sport across all phases of education. WGS Sports Leaders run competitive events engaging children from local schools and at the same time work towards their own leadership and coaching qualification.

Background

WGS is an active participant in the Wolverhampton Schools’ Sports Partnership run by the ConnectEd Partnership. As one of the few schools in the area volunteering to host and run activities we have shared our resources and facilities in order to get more young people involved in physical activity and the related benefits.

Resources

Events are hosted in the School's Sports Hall. Teaching staff are involved in the weekly training of Sports Leaders as part of their Games lessons.

Impact

To complete the course, the Sports Leaders will deliver a one-hour session to our junior school students. This is conducted in the Easter term.

Pupil Involvement

Nineteen Year 9 WGS students have been trained as Sports Leaders and delivered the events for local schools.

Sixty Year 5 and 6 pupils from 3 local primary schools took part in the Indoor Athletics Competition ran by Year 9 student Sport Leaders with the help of a Year 11 and Lower Sixth student.

Fifty students took part in this year's Level 2 Multi Skills Competition for KS1 ran by 18 Sports Leaders. 10 students participated from each school, 5 girls and 5.

Frequency

There will be a new cohort selected at the start of each academic year who will run events for partner schools.
