Wellbeing Speaker Programme

Wolverhampton Grammar School partnered with Smestow Academy, Beacon Hill School and Codsall High School to enhance students’ wellbeing education through a guest speaker programme covering topics including discrimination, law and order, mental health, safeguarding and relationships.

The Right Honourable Stuart Lawrence, Patron of the Black Curriculum, visited as part of Black History Month and he encouraged students to believe and achieve, no matter the challenges they may face due to factors including ethnicity and religion. Year 8 were visited by a serving magistrate, Stephen Russell, who used real life case studies to provide an insight into the court process, decisions on sentencing, as well as opportunities in legal careers. Indie band, The Mercians, engaged with students through their music and shared stories of their own challenges which included mental health issues, discrimination, dealing with multiple sclerosis, and depression.

 The Loudmouth Theatre Company delivered a workshop on sexual health and consent through a dramatisation of the relationship of a young couple navigating their way through a new relationship.  Students felt able to engage and discuss the topic of relationships and boundaries with the actors who remained in character.

Aims

The Guest Speaker Programme was designed to offer students a wide range of age-appropriate speakers, workshops and drama performances from specialist PSHE providers to develop students as confident, happy young people who openly discuss sensitive topics. 

Background

The partnership was established by Head of Wellbeing, Maggie Keeley with funding from the Merchant Taylors' Company. The guest speaker programme has been established for one year and it is intended that this continues annually and offers all year groups in the senior school the opportunity to enhance their PSHE education.

Resources

The guest speakers are hosted at Wolverhampton Grammar School and visiting school are offered help with transport if required.

Impact

The Guest Speaker programme has enhanced students' learning in areas of relationships, safety and life skills, physical, mental and sexual health. 

92% of students reported that their PSHE education had benefitted from the guest speaker programme and felt empowered, demonstrating high levels of engagement.

Progress in PSHE lessons has been noticeable with more in depth questioning, debate and engagement with topics. 

Pupil Involvement

300 pupils in Years 7 to 13 have benefited from the Guest Speaker Programme.
