Volunteering at Thirlestaine Park
Volunteering at care homes, talking to residents, playing games and socialising with them.
Aims
Reducing isolation by interacting with the elderly residents. Regaling stories and helping form bonds of friendship, residents are kept up to date, and in touch with what is happening in the world outside their home. Girls also help with events such as quizzes.
Background
We knew Thirlstaine Park liked having volunteers and we had not worked with them previously so we started partnering with them in 2023-2024.
Resources
Our girls take private transport to the home. They work with care home staff already in place there. Often they converse with the activities coordinator and help in any way they are asked. They remain in common areas.
Impact
The activity coordinator has more help in planning tasks and games for the elderly. Residents are able to keep in touch with what is happening in the outside world. Residents get to talk to people outside their own family and care home staff.
Pupil Involvement
Our Sixth Form students, aged between sixteen and eighteen, are involved in this opportunity.
Frequency
Girls volunteer on a weekly basis and thus they are able to build strong relationships with the residents.
