Vets - Medics & Dentist University Application Event

This event was for students in Year 11 and Year 12.

This event involved a presentation from Consultant Paediatrician at the Countess of Chester Hospital Dr Ravi Jayaram for students interested in applying for Veterinary Science, Medicine and Dentistry. It  illustrated some of the key factors in the application process, including:

• Detailed entry requirements

• The application process

• The interview process

• How students can give themselves the best chance of a successful application

It was followed by a careers fair with working professionals from each area of study and a representative from Keele University School of Medicine.

Aims

Identified need/challenge: Lack of expert guidance, face-to face advice and access to working professionals when preparing to apply for Medicine, Dentistry and Vet Science.

Critical factors: To allow as many local students as possible access to expert guidance, to help increase their confidence in applying. To give them an opportunity to ask searching and relevant questions to those currently working in the sector. 

Background

Partnership schools identified gap in overall provision of careers and application guidance. 

Impact

Online follow-up survey results: 

89% of respondents said they benefitted from speaking to professionals in careers fair section.

95% of respondents felt inspired to pursue a career in one of the fields.

84% of respondents said they gained specialist advice at the event that they hadn't accessed previously.

Pupil Involvement

102 students between the ages of 15-18 years old. 

10 'other' beneficiaries - teaching staff and parents.
