Ukrainian Support
Frensham Heights aims to provide a social and support hub for the local Ukrainian community and the relevant local voluntary groups.
Aims
The aim of this project is to assist the local Ukrainian community in any way we can. With the arrival of families from Ukraine, it became very apparent there was a lack of social opportunities, clothes and belongings.
It is very important that there is a continuous liaison between Frensham staff and the local voluntary groups set up to assist Ukrainians settling in our area. This involves securing a regular space and time in the week when our site can be accessed by the local community.
The immediate beneficiaries are Ukrainian refugees in the local area but also local residents and the school who benefit from new members of the community.
Background
When the war in Ukraine started we liaised with our local network (which had been established during the pandemic) to see how we could assist. The conversations with our community partners led us to see that we could offer space and support.
This project was established nine months ago.
Resources
The most important resources are the school space and facilities along with teacher and parent time. The partnership uses teaching staff - one teacher for many hours.
There is no direct financial contribution, just the teacher's time.
Impact
We are continually qualitatively assessing this partnership to make sure it is beneficial.
The outcome is really to help provide the Ukrainian community with the clothing and belongings they need and to help them to feel less isolated by creating social opportunities.
Pupil Involvement
Frensham Heights Years 7 & 8 students help with sorting the clothing donations and organising the donation shop. They are 11 to 13 years old and all genders are included.
Frequency
The donation shop is open 3 times a week and regular events are organised to create social opportunities.
This project will run for as long as it is needed.
