UKMT Senior Team Maths Regional Heat

LGS hosted a UKMT Senior Team Maths Regional Heat in 2019 and will do so again in 2023 when the Senior Team Competition restarts nationally.

16 teams of 4 entered the competition and a wide range of secondary schools were invited, including state and independent sector schools.

Aims

The Senior Mathematical Challenge is a 90-minute, multiple-choice Challenge.

It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems.

The problems on the Senior Mathematical Challenge are designed to make students think. Most are accessible, yet still challenge those with more experience.

LGS has the physical space and staff expertise to be able to host the event effectively, providing an opportunity for pupils to compete in a Nationally recognised competition.

64 pupils took part.

Background

Head of Maths is UKMT Treasurer and is the Secretary of the World Federation of National Maths Contests. He also writes problems for a number of different UKMT competitions that are used nationally.

LGS has hosted the competition once in 2019 and is due to host again in 2023 when it resumes post Covid.

Resources

The competition utilises the main LGS hall and 3 members of LGS staff.

LGS has no financial gain due to hosting though there is a nominal fee paid to UKMT for schools to enter.

Pupil Involvement

64 pupils took part in total, approximately half of these were from non-independent secondary schools. Pupils can be of any age to enter but the majority were in Year 11.

Frequency

This is an annual event, due to resume in 2023 and continue indefinitely.
