Trent College: U10 Hockey Workshop 2023

This was a bespoke hockey workshop for a class of 30 Year 5 children from a local primary school.

The children were given a 2-hour introduction to hockey session, where they were taught the key skills involved before ending with a mini-tournament, playing small 5 a-side competitive games.

The children were all given a hot lunch in our main dining hall, before leaving.

Aims

The aim of the partnership was to introduce a new team game to pupils in our local community. Many of the pupils had never played hard ball hockey, so it was a great introduction to the sport to hopefully stimulate interest and encourage involvement at local club level.

The success criteria were for the children to all attend, enthusiastic to learn and try something new.

Background

The partnership with the school is a long-standing one. Our Head of Hockey at Trent College, Mr Randall, is always keen to establish links with local schools and to encourage the love of hockey from a young age.

We have been running bespoke hockey workshops for the last 5 years at Trent, and the External Liaison Manager, Mrs Rhodes, offered the opportunity for this school to come along as part of the primary school partnership programme.

Resources

Two staff were involved - one teaching member (Specialist Hockey Games teacher, Mr Gleeson) for the 2-hour workshop and one non-teaching member for the 3-hour visit.

The Catterns hockey Astro pitch was used from 10.30 to 12.30pm.

All hockey equipment was provided - gum shields, sticks and balls.

The children all took home the gum shields and were given a hot lunch in our main dining hall.

Team photos were sent to everyone after the event.

Impact

The children loved the workshop and were very enthusiastic afterwards, saying they had great fun.

"It is great for the children to come here and use these fabulous facilities." Year 5 parent

"Thank you. The children have all had a fabulous time. Mr Gleeson kept them active and fully-involved for the whole session. It has been great." Year 5 teacher

Pupil Involvement

30 Year 5 pupils (aged 9-19) - boys and girls - took part in the workshop, all from a state primary school.

Frequency

This was a one-off bespoke workshop, however Trent College runs these regularly for visiting schools / children, and will continue to do so on demand.
