The Shewsy

The School’s support for Shrewsbury House (known as 'the Shewsy') Youth Club in Everton, Liverpool, founded in 1903 by a master at the School, has remained paramount. 60 Lower Sixth students visit the Shewsy each year or an overnight residential, for three days at a time and see for themselves the impact the Shewsy has on the surrounding community, in between passionate games of football and pool. A group of year 9 pupils have a shared outdoor residential with the Shewsy members at our cottage in Snowdonia. Over the summer holidays, we make a boarding house available for the residentials based at the campus.  The School's postors are responsible for organising and hosting the Youth Club’s visits to the School. Every five years there is a whole school-sponsored walk, which in 2016 raised £100,000 in 2021 raised £85,000. In between such walks fundraising is 'centred' upon support for the Shewsy's Big Give campaigns at Christmas, which raised over £80,000 in 2022

A 'Shewsy Bursary' has been set up to fund a club member through the school, for 5 years. The first beneficiary is currently attending the school.

Each year there are reciprocal visits. The school host's fixtures and fun days and our lower sixth students visit the Shewsy to take part in the themed study courses such as 'Liverpool and The Law!', 'Postcode and Health', 'Geography and Business' Plans are also being developed for shared residential visits.

Aims

To widen the experience, empathy and aspirations of both club members and pupils. To put into practice the Shewsy's motto that 'People Matter More Than Things'.

Background

Shrewsbury House was founded by masters from Shrewsbury School in 1903.

Resources

All staff are expected to have taken part in a residential visit when they arrive at the school.

The school gives a grant of £15,000 a year, from fee income and helps drive major fundraiding events.

3 teachers are on the Board of Management, which meets 6 times a year.

Impact

Youth clubs have no statutory funding from councils, so many in Liverpool have closed. The very fact that the Shewsy remains open, and thriving, is a testimony to the partnership.

All 5 of the club girls who joined the school on a shared Malawi trip did not plan on further education before they went; they are now all studying at college.

The HM is the chair of Trustees.

Pupil Involvement

5 -18 at the club

13 - 18 at the school

Frequency

This partnership started in 1903 - we intend it to last at least as long again!
