THD Phoenix Hockey Programme

During Summer term 2022 coaches from THD Hockey Club and Dulwich College visited local primary schools and delivered an introductory hockey session to year 4 pupils which acted as a talent spotting exercise for free hockey training starting in Michaelmas 2022.

The hockey sessions now run weekly on Sunday afternoons.

Aims

To introduce hockey as a sport to primary pupils who would not otherwise have access.

Background

The THD Hockey Club approached the hockey coaches at Dulwich College to explore opportunities for widening participation with the sport. Together, we proposed an approach that would introduce primary pupils to the sport, and identify those would likely benefit from free coaching sessions.

Resources

The College supports the programme by providing facilities, equipment, coaching staff and full administrative support.

The College also fund-raised for £5k to cover additional coaching costs and to purchase new protective equipment for every pupil.

Pupil Involvement

The introduction to hockey session was delivered to year 4 pupils during the summer term. 25 pupils, now in year 5, have joined the free two-year programme of hockey coaching which started in September 2022.

Frequency

The introduction to hockey session will be run annually in the summer term in local primary schools (at time to suit them).

The hockey coaching takes place on Sunday afternoons during term time.
