Supporting the Community

Students at Magdalen College School have positively contributed to the local community through various volunteering engagements. These include:

Hospital Art Projects

Sixth Form artists produce artwork designed for local hospital settings, aiming to reduce stress and provide visual stimulation for patients. The art provides a sense of calm and interest for patients who are suffering and stressed.

This project is an ongoing project which produces one new piece of art designed for a specific space every year.

Care Home Visits

Pupils build up a rapport with residents during regular care home visits by talking, playing board games and assisting with everyday tasks. This is a project which involves weekly visits to the carehomes.

The project is intended to offer a social event and friendly face to people who are otherwise relatively isolated, whilst simultaneously offering help with everyday tasks and assisting in the running of a carehome.

Hospital Placements

MCS pupils provide support on Reception and with administrative tasks. They escort patients to appointments and professional visitors to the Trust offices, carry out office duties and provide activities for patients on wards.

Help both the staff with the running of the hositals and to help keep the patients they interact with more postive and comfortable. The students visit the hospitals on a weekly basis.

Dementia Workshops

Students devise and run activities for care home residents to stimulate brain activity and memory recall, including clay modelling, giant games and learning to use chopsticks.

To help those suffering from dementia slow down the illness and to offer support for those people through conversation and activities. It occurs weekly throughout the year.

Afternoon Teas with Retired Members of the Community

Students host weekly afternoon teas at MCS for retired members of the local community living on their own.

Offers those who are otherwise quite isolated the oppportunity to socialise with both young people and those in a similar position to themselves. It is a weekly event held throughout the year.
