‘Summer Fun in the Sun’ hosted by Cutteslowe Community Centre supported by St Edward’s School

Supporting Cutteslowe Community Centre with their free Summer 2021 Programme of events for children

Aims

To support Cutteslowe Community Centre with their free Summer Programme of events for children aged 0-16

Background

Following the COVID Pandemic's multiple lockdowns and forced closures it was clear that there was neither the time nor the funding available to deliver CCA's (Cutteslowe Community Association) Summer Playscheme as delivered in previous years.

As a result; CCA were forced to rethink what and how they could provide summer activities to the children of Cutteslowe and Sunnymead that would be both engaging and COVID safe. They chose to expand the target age of participants from the playscheme's 5-11year to a more ambitious 0-16; aware that the pandemic has been incredibly difficult for all children regardless of their age. As a result and with the help from St Edward’s School and other funders and contributors they were able to develop and deliver the 'Summer Fun in the Sun' programme.

How did it work? The programme was composed of 10 weekly classes as well as 17 additional classes and sessions taking place throughout the 6 week holiday. Classes were all open access and free of charge. Activities took place predominantly outdoors

-          St Edward's School contributed both financially as well as by providing both sports and science activities

-          The Northwall Trust (sponsored by St Edward’s School)provided 'Drama' and vegetable puppet making with 'Madame Zucchini' and 'Unknown Forest' Nature Walk with Simon Daw

Resources

The School contributed both financially by donating £3,250.00 as well as by providing both sports and science activities.

Sports classes were held on the School’s playing fields using our equipment, teachers and sports leaders.

The fun science classes for older pupils was held at St Edward’s school and science for the younger pupils was taught at the Community Centre. All science classes were taught by St Edward’s teachers

9 St Edward’s staffed helped in total

Impact

Below are some quotes given directly to CCA about ‘Summer Fun in the Sun’

‘I personally think it was very well organised, with great activities and leadership. I felt happy my children were safe and doing something fun! Great opportunities for them when summer camps cost so much money and are out of reach for most families.’

‘It taught some beautiful skills to our kids and also our children came home so positively.’

‘By providing excellent activities that encourage my child to grow and develop and experience different things.’

'It provided a treat that wasn’t cost-prohibitive. It was lovely to be doing something in our community. It allowed children to meet kids out of their school community. It meant that they weren’t doing art in my home!! All fantastic!'

Pupil Involvement

During the programme they welcomed over 300 individual children from over 200 families. Some of these children joined just one activity while others came to multiple classes every week.

Frequency

Cumulatively CCA delivered 1447 hours of managed child engagement over the 6 week period with support from their partners which included St Edward’s School.
