Sports provision

St George's School, Ascot invites local schools to enjoy our sports facilities. We host sporting events and training workshops throughout the year.

Sports skills workshop: Two two-hour sessions on sports skills - football (girls only) and netball (mixed) for Year 5 and 6 pupils from 6 local primary schools.

Swimming gala: A gala run by St George's School for 6 local primary schools. Pupils in years 5 and 6 were invited to participate.

Students from Cheapside Primary School use the new swimming pool at St George's to deliver weekly curriculum swimming lessons.

Forty-eight Year 2 pupils from Windlesham visisted St George's for a Multi-sports afternoon. They had group activities such as pop tennis, and team games. First Year students (Year 7) helped assist at the event.

Aims

To share our facilities with local schools.

The schools had all requested sports skills sessions, especially female football. St George's sports staff was happy to host these events.

The aim was to run a swimming gala for local primary school children as a fun activity, to promote sports participation and provide and opportunity for local children to take part in a sporting event. It also  provided St George's School Sports A Level pupils experience of supporting a sporting event.

The swimming gala was the outcome of talks with local primary schools. This is a new event but the schools have asked whether it could become a regular fixture.

Resources

This required time from St George's PE staff and pupil helpers as well as the use of St George's sports equipment and staff from local schools willing to accompany the children.

We needed the support and input of the team who run St George's School swimming pool as they had the knowledge of running events. We also needed help from our sports A Level pupils who helped run the event. We provided snacks after the gala.

Impact

All pupil feedback on the day of the sports skills workshop was very positive as were the follow-up emails.

All schools were given a questionnaire to complete after the swimming gala, which contained very positive comments. We also received numerous follow-up emails about how much the children had enjoyed the event.

Pupil Involvement

All pupils, visiting and St George's were thoroughly engaged. St George's pupils were given the chance to practise their coaching skills and the primary children learned some essential skills and played matches.

Frequency

Sports skills workshops will be a termly activity, there is a cricket workshop scheduled for the summer term.
