Shropshire Performance Company
Over the course of the academic year Shrewsbury High School will be offering a Satellite Youth Theatre in association with the Shropshire Performance Company. Secondary aged pupils (Year 9 and above) will attend weekly workshops at the school. They will explore plays, with performance showings every half term. This will culminate in performances at The Hive and Shrewsbury High School.
Participants will be given the opportunity to:
· Create and write their own scripts
· Act in performance pieces
· See live theatre
· Work with like minded young people with a passion for drama
· Take part in work experience and backstage tours
· Gain an insight into the world of professional theatre
· Explore the thematic topics and contemporary theatre making styles of current shows
Aims
The aim of the project is to provide opportunities for local students to continue their love of drama and theatre. Many of our local schools do not offer drama now at KS4.
Background
The project is a continuation of a link we had with Birmingham Rep who for the past few years have run workshops and developed a performance piece as part of an after school / outreach project.
By linking with The Hive, our local performance company, we are able to ensure the costs are much lower and involve more local students and facilities.
Resources
We use the school performance space for rehearsals and the sessions are run by our Director of Drama The Hive.
We ask for £300 fee for the whole year which can be paid in monthly or termly instalments.
Impact
The impact is able to be measured by the number of students involved and the performances staged.
Pupil Involvement
The Workshops are open to Year 9 and above (boys and girls).
Frequency
The workshops are run weekly with a performance every half term.
This project is hoped to continue for the next few years depending on funding and staffing.
