Shrewsbury's Darwin festival - February each year

We contributed to the wonderful week of celebration of Charles Darwin's life in Shrewsbury, here at the school he attended.

Materials were sent to all primary and secondary contacts in Shropshire >75 Schools

Aims

As the school of Charles Darwin, contributing to the town's week long celebration of the great man, is of considerable importance to us.

Our aim is to show to the public some of our unique and priceless artefacts from Darwin's time here at The Schools, including one of our two copies of The Origin of Species and letters from Charles, written while at school.

We organise Darwin/evolution-related lectures, Open to state school partners and the General public.

With Marches Academy Trust we have created videos and classroom resources covering many aspects of Darwin's life and work.

Background

Original Shrewsbury established this week of celebration of Charles Darwin - seethis https://originalshrewsbury.co.uk/darwin-shrewsbury-festival

We take part by opening up part of our Moser Gallery  and hold a concert at St Alkmund's Church.

The events program cements Shrewsbury’s rightful position not only as the birthplace of Charles Darwin but as the inspiration behind his curiosity and independent thinking, which went on to change society.

Resources

The staff of the Ancient Library meticulously set up the exhibition of relevant artefacts at school.

'Discover Darwin's letters, school books and publications in a rare chance to step behind the scenes at Shrewsbury School.'

The School is fortunate to own two first editions of 'On the Origin of Species' including one signed by Charles Darwin and presented to his friend, biologist Richard Owen, who later became one of his most outspoken critics.

Half-hour tours of Shrewsbury School's Darwin Collection for up to 15 people at a time: 10 am, 10.45 am, 11.30 am, 12.15 pm

Our musicians perform in a concert in St Alkmund's church during the festival.

We source and organise lecturers who are experts on Darwin and Evolution. Events happen live on the school site and/or via webinars. These are hosted by the school and are promoted to schools and the wider general public. Attendance is free.

Our film fellow helped create and edit resources shared with state primary adn secondary schools.
