Science and Maths Enrichment Day

As a result of previous work in collaboration with The Hurlingham Academy, the Senior Teacher (PP) at Guildford HIgh School (GHS) was aware that there was a significant cohort of high achievers who would benefit from further intervention in the Sciences.  Since Maths goes hand in hand with the Sciences, it was decided to extend the remit of a ‘revision/support’ day to encompass some Maths specialist tuition. The main thrust of the day was to give an intervention which would help underpin the main concepts across the Physics/Science courses and prepare the pupils for some of the subject specific questions they would encounter in their GCSE exams.

Aims

Addressing system-level problems in Science at that time - no Physics specialist.

Impact

The relevant factors we needed to deal with were:

· The higher-level Physics requiring teaching and re-capping by a subject specialist,

· Biology and Chemistry needing support at a lower level

· Providing a Maths intervention in order to support the Physics provision.

If the intervention had not taken place then there would have been a danger that some of the more technical content of the Science specifications, especially the Physics, would not have been covered in sufficient depth.

GHS also donated a fume cupboard to their Science department so that higher level Chemistry practicals could be carried out.

Pupil Involvement

GCSE Science/Maths.
