School Swimming Partnership
Pupils aged between 12 and 14 from Abingdon and Fitzharrys undertake swimming lessons in tiered ability groups taught by senior pupils from both schools under the guidance of swimming coaches from Abingdon Vale Swimming Club.
Aims
* To give all pupils the opportunity to learn to swim at the appropriate level.
* To develop opportunities for experienced swimmers to coach and lead smaller groups, developing their communication, group management and coaching skills.
Background
The partnership was formed following discussions between colleagues at Fitzharrys School and Abingdon School. The Schools were looking to collaborate to give pupils at Fitzharrys an opportunity not currently available within their curriculum, whilst also stretching and providing extended opportunities for Abingdon pupils of the same age. The partnership started in 2016 and from 2019 we have four schools involved from 2019.
Resources
Weekly use of the Abingdon School swimming pool for one hour during the summer term as well as the time of two members of staff. Abingdon School also covers the cost of the two Abingdon Vale Swimming Club.
Impact
Following the first year, a questionnaire was sent out to Fitzharrys’ pupils asking about their experience. The findings showed very strong positive feedback along with feedback from parents including: ‘It was fantastic that my son was given the chance to swim through the school’ and ‘my son has really enjoyed his swimming opportunity’.
Pupil Involvement
Over the past two years, over 30 pupils from Abingdon School (Years 7 and 8), and 10 girls (Year 9) and 12 boys (Year 7 and 8) from Fitzharrys have taken part. There have been in the region of ten student coaches involved aged from Year 9 to Year 13 from both schools. We hope to at least increase the numbers by 50% if possible with the four schools involved in 2019.
Frequency
Weekly for a 5-week period throughout the Summer Term annually.
