Samba Drumming Workshop

We wanted to have a performing arts day where we could all learn a new skill and share this with some of our local partnership schools. Ollie Tunmer provided the answer. He is a drummer, percussionist, educator and the director of ‘Beat Goes On’. He is a former cast member of the London and European Tour casts of STOMP and a qualified teacher, and he combines these experiences and skills to produce fun, high energy workshops that both educate and entertain.

Aims

To provide resources in order to teach body percussion and samba drumming to students and teachers. There is a distinct lack of resource at primary schools and also a lack of subject knowledge from teachers (including us).

Background

This is the first time we have done this particular event and initially we were looking to use drumming and percussion expert Ollie Tunmer for an excellence programme but soon realised that we could stretch the use of Olly to encompass feeder, primaries, and staff within BET network in addition to scholars

Resources

Bringing Ollie to Monkton to provide excellent tutoring in samba and body percussion and the use of the Bowerman Hall and Monkton teaching and support staff and minibuses.

Salisbury School also had an hour's body percussion workshop at their school.

Impact

So many qualitative impacts:

Understanding of movement and rhythm, ensemble skills, listening skills, symbiosis, communication, literacy.

Sharing resource with pupils who otherwise wouldn't have this opportunity.

Pupil Involvement

KS2 & KS3

Frequency

First time we have done this but with a possibility that it becomes an annual event.
