Royal Institution Primary Maths Masterclass 2024

Year 12 A level Maths students offering support and teaching to local Year 5 primary school children.

Aims

To connect with local Primary schools and promote STEM subjects with Year 5 pupils. To extend and challenge enthusiastic Year 5 mathematicians.

Background

The lead teacher (Danielle Lewis) heard about and visited the masterclasses happening at another Hertfordshire school, so contacted the Royal Institution about starting our own series. It was established in 2019.

Resources

It uses a STAHS classroom. One STAHS staff member involved from the Maths dept. Financial contribution: snacks provided for breaktime (partnership budget)

Impact

Very positive feedback from pupils and their teachers.
Benefit to our Year 12 students who presented the masterclasses. They gained skills in teamwork, communication and leadership.
