Rowledge TA Classroom Support and Workshops
A partnership between our Sixth Form and the local primary school where Sixth Form students provide much needed classroom support.
Aims
The aims of this partnership are to assist the local primary school in specialist subject areas whilst giving our students leadership opportunities.
Rowledge Primary School was keen to have additional support in the classroom which Frensham Heights has been able to provide.
The key factor for success is a continual liaison between Frensham Heights and Rowledge Primary School staff to ensure both sides are fully prepared for the lessons.
The immediate beneficiaries are the Rowledge Primary School students and the Frensham Heights Sixth Form students, but also the wider community benefits from the partnership between the two schools and the community cohesion that creates.
Background
This project developed from our continued aim to assist our local primary school in any way we can whilst also giving our students leadership opportunities. Rowledge were keen to have some additional support in the classroom and we were keen to create more leadership opportunities for our students.
The project has been running for one year.
Resources
The critical resources in this project are the Frensham Heights Sixth Form students who provide the classroom support. For logistical reasons, the project doesn't use the Frensham Heights school site, the students go to Rowledge Primary School.
The project does use teaching staff - one teacher for one and a half hours a week. There is no direct financial contribution, just the teacher's time.
Impact
We use qualitative assessment every half term to make sure the project is beneficial for all.
Frensham Heights students have fed back about how much they have developed their confidence in helping lead sessions and the improvement in their planning skills. Rowledge Primary School has fed back regularly to thank us as they have seen excellent engagement from their students with ours.
Pupil Involvement
Frensham Heights Sixth Form students, 16 to 18 years old, assist in the classroom and Rowledge Primary School students, 7 to 11 years old, are fully involved in the lessons. All genders are included.
Frequency
This is an ongoing project which takes place every Wednesday throughout the academic year. It is likely to continue for one year.
