Rowledge Primary School Science Club
Frensham Heights assists Rowledge Primary school Years 5 & 6 students with their Science provision through support from a specialised Science teacher, Sixth Form Science students and use of the fully equipped Science Labs.
Aims
The aim of this partnership is to assist the local primary school in specialist subject areas whilst giving Frensham Heights students leadership opportunities.
It was identified that Rowledge Primary School would benefit from support with their science provision for Years 5 and 6 students.
For the project to succeed, continual liaison happens between Frensham Heights and Rowledge Primary School staff. This ensures both sides are fully prepared and that we have a suitable time to use our Science labs and available transport for the students.
The immediate beneficiaries are the Rowledge Primary School Years 5 and 6 students and Frensham Heights Sixth Form Science students. The wider local community benefits from the partnership between the two schools through community cohesion.
Background
The partnership developed from our continued relationship to assist our local primary school in any way we can whilst giving our students leadership opportunities. Rowledge Primary School were keen to utilise our offer of facilities and expert tuition in specialist areas.
This partnership has been going for five years.
Resources
The main resources are our specialist Science teachers' time and the availability of Science Lab space and transportation for the primary school children to the school site.
The school site (the Science Labs) and the school minibuses are used for this project. The project also uses teaching staff - two teachers for an hour and a half.
There is no direct financial contribution, just the teachers' time and transportation and facilities costs.
Impact
We use qualitative assessment every term to ascertain the benefits of the partnership.
Our students have fed back to us about how much they have developed their confidence inhelping lead sessions and the improvement in their planning skills. Rowledge have fed back regularly to thank us as they have seen excellent engagement from their students in the Science sessions.
Pupil Involvement
Frensham Heights Sixth Form students assist in leading the sessions and Rowledge Primary School years 5 & 6 students are fully involved as well.
The Frensham Heights students are 16 to 18 years old and the Rowledge students are 9 to 11 years old. All genders are included.
