Reading Partners for Putnoe Primary School Children
Four Sixth formers have been visiting Putnoe Primary School on a weekly basis to act as reading partners for the children there. This has proven to be of help to the class teachers and TAs who can continue to teach the whole class while the children can come out of class to read without disruption.
Aims
To provide Putnoe Primary School with Lower Sixth pupils who can help the younger children with their reading.
Background
In order to help alleviate pressure from teachers and teaching assistants, Lower Sixth boys from Bedford School have been visiting Putnoe Primary School weekly to listen to the younger children read.
Resources
Before the boys went to the primary school for the first time, they had a short training session with our Prep School librarian, and were provided with an information/prompt sheet, called 'Listening to children read'.
Impact
Time is freed up for teachers and teaching assistants in lessons while pupils come out of class for reading.
The primary teacher asked their pupils for feedback and came back to us saying, "Feedback is great! I met them all in reception initially and they came across really well. They were very respectful and polite. The children enjoyed working with them and are looking forward to seeing them again next week."
