Reading Assembly
Our Head of Library Services and Primary School Liaison Co-ordinator visited three external primary schools (Dovedale Primary School, Firfield Primary School and Longmoor Primary School) to deliver a whole school reading assembly, to promote a general love of reading and encourage children to read more widely for pleasure.
Aims
The key aim was to inspire primary school children to pick up a book and read, through sharing different genre and authors of books and a favourite story of our own.
Background
The opportunity arose following an author visit that the Y6 children from the schools had attended. The children were invited to enter various literary-based competitions to win a book prize, that we subsequently awarded to the winning child during the assembly.
Resources
The only resources were the time of the 2 non-teaching members of staff involved and the book prizes, that had been signed by the author.
Impact
Verbal feedback was obtained to say that the children had enjoyed the assembly and the story that we told. The Year 6 children were all very keen to read more books by the author that had visited.
Pupil Involvement
Dovedale Primary School - 380 children from Reception to Year 6 (ages 4 to 11)
Firfield Primary School - 240 KS2 children from Year 3 to Year 6 (ages 6 to 11)
Longmoor Primary School - 320 children from Year 1 to Year 6 (ages 5 to 11)
Frequency
Single events but will be repeated if the opportunity arises.
