Quarry Run

Shrewsbury High School hosts an annual Quarry Run (Cross Country Running Competition) with local schools entering teams of girls or boys in the Under 9 and Under 11 races.

This is a fantastic opportunity for all pupils to compete and enjoy the splendours of the Quarry Park and is well supported each year and over subscribed.

Teams of six complete one lap of the course and the first four finishers count towards their school’s points total. The course takes runners from our school sports field, into the Quarry before looping back into the sports field to the finish line.

Aims

To provide an opportunity for local primary schools to take part in a Cross Country Running Competition in the heart of our beautiful town.

To allow children to compete against other schools.

This is a competition with clear criteria for judging (fastest runners) and is a very popular event locally and over subscribed.

Background

The event was established by our Junior School PE Co-ordinator in response to the need for a cross country competition for the age groups at Juniors.

Resources

We base the start and end of the race on our school field with refreshments being provided on site. Our school minibuses provide the transport for the teams.

Our PE staff run the event with support from other staff who are keen runners who act as the 'hares' for the children to 'chase'.

The event is provided free of charge to all the participating teams and is funded by our Outreach Programme.

Impact

Local schools compete for trophies in each race - the event is hugely popular and nothing similar exists locally.

Each year, the event is growing in size with more schools wanting and being able to take part.

Pupil Involvement

Pupils from Years 3-6 can take part with separate races for Boys or Girls in the two age groups of Under 9s and under 11s.

Other than our own teams of girls, all the other teams are from the local state primary schools.

Frequency

The event happens once a year in the Spring Term and will continue indefinitely due to its popularity.
