Primary Schools Cricket Festival

A cricket festival engaging a number of primary school pupils in a wide range of cricketing skill activities and games delivered by highly experienced coaches and senior King's School Worcester pupils.

Aims

The primary aim of the Primary School Cricket Festival initiative was to provide local primary school children with the opportunity to experience, develop and learn cricket skills.

Through the Partnership teams ongoing engagement with local primary schools it became apparent that local primary schools are unable to fulfil all of their sports curriculum. Events such as Cricket Festivals, alongside other similar events run by the King's School Worcester aim to plug these gaps.

The immediate beneficiaries of the cricket festival are clearly the 100 children coming from seven different primary schools from across Worcestershire.

The event itself was extremely well received by the teaching staff in the respective primary schools.

Background

The Partnership Team is in regular communication with a wide range of local primary schools in regard to a whole host of events. Schools were contacted directly with an invitation to attend.

Primarily, the opportunity was identified by the Director of Sport at King's School Worcester with a vision to provide children with the opportunity to develop core skills whilst also experiencing a new sport which they may wish to develop further.

Resources

Critical resources for this initiative included sports teaching and coaching staff time alongside support provided by the King's School Worcester Sixth Form pupils.

The King's School Worcester facilities were utilised for this event, namely Slingpool Walk playing fields located adjacent to Worcestershire County Cricket Ground.

Participants arrived as school groups at 1.00pm either via mini buses provided by The King's School Worcester, their own mini buses or by foot. Parents were welcomed to watch and support from all schools with refreshments provided.

The financial contribution from the King's School Worcester was around £250 which included certificates for all participants, a match tea for all participants as well as a bag of goodies to take away. The event ended at 3.30pm.

Impact

Feedback received both verbally and by email from all of the schools following the event was hugely positive with teachers commenting on how much the pupils had benefited and learned from the event.

Pupil Involvement

Pupils visiting were all in Year 4 with groups being made up of a mixture of boys and girls. Sixth Form pupils from the King's School Worcester were utilised to support the event.

Frequency

On the back of the success of the event there are plans for future sporting events in partnership with local primary school. The next Cricket Festival is already in the school calendar for the Summer Term 2024.
