Primary School Swimming

At King's we are proud to work with a number of local primary schools, enabling them to include regular swimming sessions in their curriculum. The school provides lifeguarding cover for all these sessions.

Aims

The aim of the partnerships are to enable access to as many local children as possible to regular swimming lessons. Most primary schools do not have easy access to a pool in order to provide vital lessons that could, one day, safe a life.

Background

The Head of Swimming and Aquatics at King's College has developed relationships with a number of local primary schools, as well as with the SASP Partnership schools to broaden the use of the school pool for local primary schools. This has been a long-standing programme with some schools and is newer with others.

Resources

The main resource is the 25m swimming pool. Swimming aids and other pool resources are also used, including the changing facilities. King's College provides the lifeguarding cover for all for all the sessions. For some of the primary schools expert swimming tuition is also included; other schools teach the lessons themselves.

Pupil Involvement

Some Sixth Form pupils are used to help with the life guarding duties once they have completed their NPL Qualification.

Across the course of the year we estimate that 1,140 pupils from 11 different schools will have access to curriculum swimming sessions (in most cases the pupils have lessons for half a term each on rotation).

Frequency

This is an ongoing provision for local schools and we see no reason for the success of these partnerships not to thrive for many years to come.
