Primary School Sport provision

St Michael's send one of their sport coaches to local primary schools to supplement the PE provision for one morning each week, over the course of a term. The same member of staff is timetabled to deliver this each week to aid with continuity and familiarity between the member of staff and the children.

The scheme has been set up to run all year round, but the member of staff endeavours to move between as many schools as possible and currently, over one academic year, the staff member has visited seven local primary schools.

Aims

The aim of the initiative was to support the existing PE provision in local primary schools with a qualified sport coach who would be able to provide consistent and quality PE lessons to the children of the school being visited over the course of one or two terms.

We looked to judge success via the ongoing engagement of the children and to be able to observe any improvement in the skills being exhibited.

Background

The idea for this initiative was first implemented by an ex-Director of Sport, to allow for the delivery of quality sport lessons to local primary schools.

Resources

This is a mixture of the existing resources at the primary schools and more portable resources that are taken each week by the SMS member of staff. The resources taken to the schools are mostly, balls, bats, cones, bibs, etc

Impact

There have been sporadic visits by the Director of Sport to observe lessons. The member of staff that delivers the curriculum in the schools has recently changed and a more formal, scheduled series of observations is being planned to take place to assist in identifying need and to promote additional, positive interactions.

Pupil Involvement

Of the four schools that are currently visited, they are all co-educational and the ages range from Year 1 to Year 5. The possibility of the SMS Sport Scholars attending some of the lessons is being explored. With the new member of staff in post, the priority was creating the new links and generating the relationships with the schools.
