Primary Cubic Maths Challenge

We organised a maths competition which included a day of maths puzzles for teams of 4 Year 5 and 6 children for maintained schools. It also included a lecture from a King's former pupil Rob Eastaway, a well known TV/radio children's mathematician.

Aims

To offer maths extention opportunities for talented Year 5/6 pupils. We invited all local maintained school in our area. We welcomed 52 children from 10 schools.

Background

The opportunity was identified by King's Director of External Relations after hearing about the success of a primary maths competition in Leeds.

The first event was in November 2017 and it will be an annual event.

Resources

Maths teaching resources: 4 King's teachers leading the 4 team tasks and the planning of the activities.

Find and secure Lecture speaker.

Use of facilities and lunch/snacks at Kings'.

The event was fully paid by King's.

Impact

Feedback from the visiting schools via a questionnaire completed by the accompanying teachers at the end of the day found all children found the tasks fun but challenging. All the schools wanted us to repeat the competition next year.

Pupil Involvement

52 Year 5/6 children from 7 schools.

Frequency

One day's competition to be repeated annually.
