PDT Department provide 100s of protective visors

Dean Close School's PDT Department have answered a number of requests to provide polypropylene protective visors for health care workers at Cheltenham General Hospital and GP surgeries, medical centres and care homes in Gloucestershire.

Aims

The identified need was a lack of protective equipment for many health care workers on the front line. As long as the PDT Department had the resources, protective visors could be given to front-line health care workers in a number of locations.

Background

Dean Close's PDT Department was approached originally by a GP parent and local care homes but soon the message got out and requests came in from all over Gloucestershire. Dom Evans, Head of PDT, and his department team saw the opportunity to manufacture protective visors in the school's workshop. This has only taken place since April 1st 2020 during the Covid-19 outbreak.

Resources

Sufficient materials were required and the use of the Dean Close PDT Centre with its equipment. Three staff have worked for four hours each day so far for 5 days but will continue as long as stocks last. These protective visors have been donated free of charge. When polypropylane material ran out, a local Banner Printing business in Cheltenham donated large sheets free of charge.

Impact

The impact is assessed through both the increasing number of requests as a result of the first batch being delivered, and through the letters and verbal thanks of appreciation from those to whom these protective visors have been donated.

‘The masks flew through the infection control test and all the ladies on her team were completely taken aback by them; they thought the messages written on them were amazing!!!’ (Cheltenham General Oncology Unit)

‘Many thanks to Dean Close School for the fabulous visors for ward 3A at Gloucester Royal!’

‘I wanted to email to pass on my thanks to the team at Dean Close School who have done a fantastic job making protective visors for our frontline clinical staff. I know they are very much appreciate by the ward teams and we are very, very grateful for the time and effort that has been put into assisting us in this exceptionally challenging time.’ (Charlton Lane Community Hospital)

Pupil Involvement

No pupils have been involved in this, since schools are closed for the Covid-19 outbreak on government advice.

Frequency

This is an on-going response to a global emergency, with its local impact on Cheltenham, Gloucestershire and the wider South West/Midlands region.
