Pathway to Oxbridge
Wolverhampton Grammar School has partnered with Beacon Hill Academy to offer a 'Pathways to Oxbridge' experience day. Spearheaded by the new Head of Careers, Miss Kailey, this opportunity is being offered to 15 students from Beacon Hill Academy in Dudley, as well as to 18 existing WGS students. This forms part of an early Higher Education and Careers programme targeting students in Year 10 to provide support which will continue until the end of their applications in Year 13. Following the initial awareness day, students will visit Oxford University to network with current Oxbridge alumni.
Students will gather useful tips about preparation for Oxbridge interviews, knowledge about the Oxbridge application and selection process, as well as the benefits of attending one of these prestigious universities. They will hear from Careers Education experts as well as WGS students who have first-hand experience of applying or attending these institutions. Former WGS pupil, Katie Naylor, who graduated from Oxford University in 2021 with a degree in Biomedical Science shared her experiences to our future Oxbridge hopefuls.
Aims
In an increasingly difficult selection and application process, WGS is helping both its own students and those of the partner school to get a head start with their applications as part of an early education programme about HE pathways, specifically Oxbridge entry.
33 Year 10 students benefitted from this event.
Background
The opportunity was initially identified for WGS students and extended to students form Beacon Hill Academy, with whom we collaborate in a number of subject areas.
Resources
The awareness event will be hosted in our Sixth Form Centre, with a trip to Oxford University as a follow up.
Pupil Involvement
18 WGS students and 15 Beacon Hill Academy students in Year 10 took part.
Frequency
It is intended that this is repeated yearly.
