Outreach programme with St William of Perth Primary School

Every Friday during term time one of our year 12 pupils supports each of the 5 classes, spanning nursery to Year 6, working with the class teacher in the education and support of the pupils. There are normally 30 children in each class.

Aims

Supporting primary education.

Enrichment for KSR pupils

Background

This programme was run prior to Covid for many years but only re-started in 2021.

Impact

I have taught the middle group.  At the same time as teaching the children I have been educating the class teacher on how to teach and how to progress each lesson on Front Crawl, Backstroke and Breaststroke. He is an NQT and never taught swimming before. Last Tuesday he had to teach the top group for the first time and did a reasonably good job of it.  This I think is an invaluable contribution to the children as they will in future get a better quality of lesson from this teacher than a teacher that has no idea what they should/could be doing to help improve the performance and ability of the children.

There is one child in the group that is autistic. He spent week one on the side of the pool unable to get in, week two sitting on the edge, week three sitting on the top step getting all of his legs wet, week four he got in and had to be held by the teacher throughout. week five and six he is playing in the water and appears happy. I hope the school will continue to bring him swimming with Year 4 next term.

Pupil Involvement

Five from year 12.

Frequency

One hour per week.
