Music is a Universal Language which Brings People Together
The importance of offering music in the community cannot be understated. Music brings people together and offers them the opportunity to share and develop many skills.
When people study music, they learn much more than simply how to sing or play an instrument, it fosters and nurtures a number of transferable skills such as self-discipline, perseverance, memory and concentration, confidence, communication, teamwork
As a school we are advocates of ‘music for all’, and recognise the need for area ensembles to be made available to all musicians in the local community. Offering local students the opportunity to work with specialist teachers allows those from the community and at Moreton the chance to develop these skills for the future, whether or not they become professional musicians.
The Manager of Shropshire Music Service and founder of the SMEH (Shropshire Music Educational Hub) is a huge advocate of the musical opportunities that we offer to the local community, so much so that Moreton Hall is now the home of North Shropshire Music, (NSM) and is led by our Director of Music. Our Director of Music lives locally and is actively working to promote Music programmes and initiatives within the community.
NSM is a centre or ‘hub’ of musical excellence within the region offering instrumental ensembles for all ages and abilities, such as North Shropshire Training Orchestra; North Shropshire Orchestra and North Shropshire Big Sing.
The Big Sing is not just about singing songs, it is about learning vocal and breathing techniques and enhancing important key skills such as: literacy, numeracy and language and is run by one of our singing teachers, who also works in the NHS alongside consultants and doctors to facilitate ‘Singing for Lung Health’. Reflecting on this initiative, the Director of Music commented: ‘Moreton Hall is leading the way with such an initiative and we are proud to have such a positive working partnership with such a forward thinking independent school.’
It is these types of initiatives that really help to enrich our whole society, and Moreton will not be stopping there - we will continue to develop to ensure we are offering as many opportunities for young people and adults alike to share in music making.
