Monkton Pupils Contribute to Outdoor Learning Space at Winsley Primary
A group of Year 12 Monkton pupils visited Winsley Primary School to make six benches out of sleepers for a new outdoor learning space.
Aims
To help Winsley develop a new outdoor learning space by providing resources and people to make it happen. To benefit Monkton pupils in allowing them to develop new practical, team-work, and communication skills, and benefit Winsley pupils longer-term with the opportunity to learn outside which has known benefits.
Background
Ongoing mutual partnership between Winsley and Monkton. Winsley are keen to provide opportunities for Monkton pupils and Monkton is keen to provide support and resources where needed.
Resources
Two Monkton teaching staff supported our pupils.
One member of Monkton's Grounds team helped transport materials.
A group of 8 Monkton Year 12 pupils made the benches.
Monkton supplied drills and tools.
Winsley PTA paid for the wood.
Impact
There are benefits both to the Monkton pupils who carried out the construction, and the Winsley pupils who will be able to learn outside.
For Monkton pupils, benefits include developing service, a sense of satisfaction, project management, practical skills, team-work and communication, and being outside.
For Winsley pupils, there are known benefits to learning outside, and this also offers a wider range of learning opportunities.
Pupil Involvement
A group of 8 Monkton Year 12 pupils were involved in making the benches. No Winsley pupils were involved in this practical element, but all will benefit from the new outdoor learning space.
Frequency
This is 1 of 4 Monkton trips to Winsley over the course of this academic year, to help develop their outdoor spaces.
