Maths Programme
A dedicated team of Winchester College maths teachers and pupils run a year-round programme of clubs and activities for the benefit of school children aged 6 - 18, with the aim that local children who have an interest in maths can access extra support throughout their school careers.
- Win@Maths: A weekly club for primary school children in Years 3 & 4 where sixth formers from Winchester College work on maths problems and mathematical games with them in the local library.
- Primary Maths Challenge: A series of classes held at Winchester College to help prepare pupils in Years 4 - 6 for the national Primary Maths Challenge (PMC). Pupils who are unable to sit the PMC at their primary school are invited to sit the challenge at Winchester College.
- Winchester Maths Challenge: A special challenge set by the Maths department for children in Years 5 & 6, which is useful preparation for the national competition.
- Problem Solving Clubs: Weekly clubs held at Winchester College that aim to stretch able pupils aged 11-18 who enjoy mathematics. They include some preparation for the national competitions run by the UK Maths Trust.
- British Maths Olympiad (BMO1) Preparation: A series of weekly evening sessions in the Autumn that focus on preparing pupils for the British Maths Olympiad (BMO1).
- Maths Lectures: Twice a year the school hosts a mathematical lecture, aimed at secondary and sixth formers students, but open to all with free entry.
- Maths Lunches: The Head of Maths runs a weekly lunch event for Year 12 pupils of Peter Symonds College alongside Winchester College boys to discuss mathematical topics.
- Winchester Maths Summer School: This annual week-long residential course is available to Year 12 students from maintained sector schools who are interested to study maths at university. The course is led by specialist maths teachers from Winchester College, supported by undergraduate and graduate students from leading universities, with funded places available to those who need them.
- Maths and More Summer School: a two-day event for students in Year 10 to delve deeper into mathematical concepts.
- Online Primary Schools Maths Outreach: During the Coronavirus pandemic, the Maths department ran a special online programme for primary school children in Years 4, 5 & 6 to support able and enthusiastic young mathematicians and mentor them for future mathematical challenges.
- There is an annual Year 10 Maths Competition. In 2023, 10 teams from UTC Portsmouth, Westgate, Midhurst Rother, Wildern and Winton Community Academy took part. Students were challenged with a series of Maths problems requiring teamwork and quick thinking!
Resources
The programme makes use of teaching space at Winchester College to run its workshops, and other facilities at the school for lunch events and lectures.
The Winchester Maths Summer School is a residential course, and as well as teaching spaces, makes use of boarding houses and other facilities for children's recreation.
A school minibus is used to facilitate the Maths Lunches with Peter Symonds College, and school food is provided to attendees.
Impact
Over 200 primary and secondary school pupils benefit from the Maths programme every year, with around another 30 Year 12 pupils attending the annual Winchester Maths Summer School.
Pupils who have attended the Maths programme have gone on to study Maths at university, including Cambridge and Warwick Universities.

15 local primary schools participate in our Primary Maths Challenge mentoring programme.
Pupil Involvement
An average of 12 Winchester College pupils are involved in running the maths clubs and workshops as part of the wider Community Service programme.
