Maths off Piste Lecture

Forest School host an annual Math Off Piste Lecture. Students who are interested in a future in maths can attend an annual lecture from a prestigious mathematician.

A guest lecturer is invited to Forest School as a maths inspiration project for pupils from the School and other local schools. Ben Sparks and Alex Bellos have been previous mathematicians that have presented the lecture.

Aims

The aim of the workshop was to encourage and spark an interest in maths, by inviting a dynamic speaker.

Background

We have always run a MOP lecture but through our ongoing partnership work we now invite local sixth former to attend from our partnership schools.

Resources

The use of the theatre, the cost of the lecturer and the availability of staff to ensure that the event runs smoothly.

Impact

We had over 200 students attend from Forest and from 6 local sixth forms.

Students enhance their mathematical understanding through listening to a lecture from a top mathematician.

Pupil Involvement

200 students of mixed gender from our school (aged 11-18) and sixth formers from external schools (16-18).

Frequency

Annual lecture.
