Maths and Latin Lessons for Primary School Children
Two Sixth Formers have been visiting St James’ Primary School once a week to teach Year 5 pupils. One boy has been teaching a group of children Latin, which they would not normally have had the opportunity to learn, and the other boy has been teaching extended Maths skills to a different group. During COVID lockdown, the boy who was teaching Maths continued to teach remotely from his home in Hong Kong, sending weekly lessons and worksheets to the class teacher at St James’ Primary.
Aims
To provide additional opportunities in Maths and Latin to Year 5 pupils, based on specific requests from the Headteacher and class teacher at St James' Primary.
Background
During a preliminary survey, the Head at St James’ identified two groups of her Y5 children who would benefit from some further opportunities to stretch and challenge them.
Two of our pupils have been providing lessons to these groups – the first is teaching an introduction to Latin and the second is teaching additional Maths skills. They have worked in conjunction with the primary class teacher, who gave them background information as to the prior learning of the pupils. The Sixth Formers subsequently planned and delivered their own lessons.
Resources
Computer / whiteboard in the classroom used. The boys have on occasion provided worksheets.
Impact
The group learning Latin are learning a brand new subject that they would not otherwise have had access to.
The group being taught extended maths have gained an extra understanding of the subject, and have been challenged beyond their curriculum maths.
Pupil Involvement
Two Sixth Formers.
Frequency
Weekly, during term time.
