Marine Conservation Society

Each year, the school joins dozens of local volunteers on the beach clean. As we are a school with a beach boundary and the beach is used by the school for both sporting and academic activities, it is important that the school has its own social responsibility for helping to maintain a clean environment.

Aims

Beachwatch is our national beach cleaning and litter surveying programme, helping people all around the UK to care for their coastline. Some of our best-loved marine wildlife is under threat from the waste and litter in our seas, with hundreds of species accidentally eating or becoming entangled in litter. It is also dangerous for people and damaging to our tourism and fishing industries. We all have a part to play in turning the tide on litter.

Background

The partnership started 5 years ago when members of the Rossall community walked their dogs on the beach. They were upset by the amount of litter in the area and decided to become part, with the school, of the clean-up campaign.

Resources

The initiative involves both members of the teaching staff and the students.

Our kitchens provide refreshements on the beach at Cleveleys for all of the volunteers that clean the beach, not just the ones from school.

Pupil Involvement

The event is open to all of our students, although it is mainly the older ones that participate.

Frequency

The beach cleaning initiative is a yearly, ongoing event, althought he school are in the process of organising smaller more regular beach cleans.
