Local MFL Provision
We support provision of French and Spanish in two local schools
Aims
To support students with language learning, both helping to secure the best possible GCSE grades and also raising ambition for those who might potentially continue with MFL to A Level and beyond
Background
The Priory School had problems finding a Spanish assistant and asked if we could help.
Shrewsbury Academy School sought help from our students who could visit to encourage opting for MFL to GCSE and beyond.
Resources
Our Hispanic Fellow visits the Priory for 6 hours per week in term time, assisting one year 10 class and two year 11 classes. Each set has a one hour session.
Students from the Priory School have had an hour of extra lessons in Spanish during 2021-2 and 2022-3 partly as a response to Covid 19 disruption , then in support of higher achieving pupils. In addition there are regular French masterclasses looking to stretch linguistically and open up cultural horizons. Sessions take place in the week and also on Saturday mornings.
Impact
We know from previous cohorts, through results analysis and student voice that the work is both valued and very effective. Students report feeling better supported, more prepared and confident.
Data shows speaking as one of the strongest skills for our cohorts and with a significant impact on overall results.
Pupil Involvement
One year 10 set of 24 students;
two year 11 sets of 17 and 14 students.
Frequency
This provision is 6 hours per week during term time with the Spanish assistant
Additionally support for 1 hour per week has been provided. It is expected that this arrangement will continue into the future.
