Let's learn Latin!
An introduction to Latin for Year 4 pupils, taught by our Year 10 girls. Each class in the Year 4 cohort experienced their first taste of Latin, taught by two Latin teaching staff of Norwich High and assisted by 12 GCSE pupils. A series of fun and engaging activities were planned by the girls and teaching staff and taken to the school one morning, delivered in a fun and interactive way.
Aims
To provide pupils in years 5 and 6 with an introduction to Latin and to Classics. This supplements the KS2 topic on Romans and is timed to coincide with this topic being taught in the local primary school.
No Latin is currently taught in the Avenues Primary school, so this brings further breadth to the KS2 curriculum. It also enables our Year 10 girls to take a lead in developing the resources and running the workshops.
The morning of Latin generates enthusiasm and interest amongst the younger pupils and allows them to develop new skills in language.
Pupils in both schools benefit directly from this partnership. Our Yr 10 girl sin terms of pupil development and the young pupils in terms of being introduced to a new subject discipline otherwise not available to them.
Background
Our Latin teacher recognised the need for this link; her daughter was at the local primary school and this gave us an initial contact.
The partnership has been running for 7 years and this year developed further to cover a whole year group.
Resources
Teaching aids such as name cards, vocab cards and posters were generated by the Norwich High pupils. Both pupils and two teaching staff from Norwich High are involved in the workshops for a full morning. Other than costs of reprographics, there are no additional costs involved.
Impact
The 120 primary pupils benefited from this intro because it opened a window on a new subject/ civilisation, drawing links with their history. Our Year 10 girls too benefitted from developing their skills of communication, working with the youngsters in the lesson.
The feedback form is 100% positive. "Your pupils were superb - at times it was difficult to work out who were the teachers and who were the pupils!". Feedback is collected after each session.
Pupil Involvement
Our pupils are in year 10. This is delivered to years 4 and 5, depending on what year and when the romans topic is being covered.
Frequency
There were four classes/ workshops, and this takes place annually. It is to be repeated for the foreseeable future and possibly rolled out to more of our local schools too.
