Lecture Programme with local schools and community

The school runs a Tuesday night lecture programme which involves a range of visiting speakers who come and speak on a wide range of different topics. These lectures go beyond the school curriculum and are enriching in nature. Members of the local community and local schools are able to come along if they wish to.

Recent examples include:

Dr Helen Scales, Marine Biologist, Writer and Broadcaster

Ayo Onotade, The Rich Threads of Histories and Cultures within English Literature

Juno Dawson, Novelis and Screen Writer

Dr Marianna Koli, Dean for Education in Business and Economics at New College of the Humanities

Aims

To provide academic enrichment to the school and wider community. This event benefits students, teachers and members of the local community.

Background

The town of Calne, due to its geographical location, is not always able to host eminent speakers to enrich the lives of those in the community. St Mary’s, through providing this for their students, are able to bring this opportunity to others who may not otherwise get this chance.

Resources

This is a high quality programme which St Mary's Calne organises and provides a suitable venue. Staff are present in addition to students in the Sixth Form as well as students from younger year groups where appropriate. All the costs are covered by St Mary's.

Pupil Involvement

Students from local schools attend with teachers and/or families, along with other members from the local community.

Frequency

A lecture is held most Tuesday nights during term time. This is an ongoing project.
