King's Geology: Primary Dino Digs

An opportunity for primary pupils to access our specialist Geology provision and fossil collection. Sessions introduce pupils to the basics of geology, rock formations and the dinosaurs, with the chance to learn from hands-on contact with fossils and to make their own casts.

Following the fossil experience pupils receive a pencil case and fossil. They then go on to have lunch in our refectory, assisted by pupils, and have a brief tour of the school.

Aims

To introduce pupils to Geology as a subject and to allow them hands-on experience of fossils and other artefacts.

Aimed at Year 5 and 6 pupils (though others may benefit too).

Background

Established through links with local schools and our partnerships team.

Resources

Critical resources include the Geology lab, our expert subject leader and the extensive fossil collection.

Sessions take place on alternate weeks, according to demand.

All sessions are free of charge. Pupils receive parting gifts of pencil cases and fossils.

Impact

Impact evaluation is ongoing. Pupils attend as whole class groups.

From partner primary teacher:

"Can I pass on the thanks and praise of staff here at XX Primary for the fossils, breakfasts, lunches and science assembly. Our staff are commenting on how well looked after they are when over at Kings, how good you all are as teachers and interacting with the children, how interesting the fossil/cathedral tour was etc. Thank you all so much. It really makes me happy how well the partnership is going."

Pupil Involvement

Year 5 and 6, approx 25 pupils per visit.  Pupil premium percentages are around 40% in our partner primary schools.

Frequency

These are one-off events on a rolling programme, and are likely to roll-out to include larger events in the Summer term especially.
