Junior Stretch and Challenge Conference
King's hosted this event as part of the United Kingdom 2019 Junior Programme Gifted & Talented Study Day Programme of Academy Conferences. The event was for able Key Stage 3 pupils (Year 7-9, ages 12-14) and explored the following themes:
Session 1: Genetics, Epigenetics Transhumanism
Session 2: Interactive Guided Community of Inquiry
Session 3: Justice Truth Beauty and Maths
Session 4: Debate
King's funded (£25 per pupil) a number of places for local secondary schools.
Aims
This study day offers a unique provision for academically gifted students.
The aim of this study day is to help gifted students to:
Improve their thinking skills.
Begin to be able to identify what is fundamental from what is trivial.
Become intellectually creative.
Identify assumptions and distinguish between good and poor arguments.
Think systematically and rigorously about relevant modern day issues.
Background
Head of Social Sciences and Maths, Philosophy and Theology Department liaised with Academy Conferences and King’s marketing Department to establish demand for event in region.
Resources
Teaching and Marketing staff required to plan and coordinate the event, including inviting external schools.
Teaching and Marketing staff required throughout the day.
Use of school theatre and other meeting rooms.
King's funded (£25 per pupil) a number of places for local secondary schools.

More than 140 external pupils attended from 12 schools, aged 12-14.
