Infant school reading support

A group of RBCS pupils led by a specialist teacher visit a local infant school and run a reading club for Year 2 and 3 pupils. The aim of the project is to help young pupils learn to read and develop a love of reading to others.

Aims

The aim of the project is to assist the school with reading lessons. One-to-one sessions are provided by RBCS pupils and a specialist member of staff.

The lead member of staff trains Sixth Form pupils to assist younger pupils with reading and monitors the work they are doing during the sessions.

Willow Bank pupils will gain confidence in reading to older pupils and adults. RBCS pupils will learn the best way to teach reading - a very useful skill.

Background

This need was identified by the Deputy Head teacher at Willow Bank Infants School. This partnership was suggested by one of the governors who works at RBCS. The activity has been running since September 2024.

Resources

The team uses the library at Willow Bank Infant School which is reasonably stocked with suitable books. Due to the age of the pupils and the time of day, the activity takes place at Willow Bank.

The lead is a specialist Learning Support teacher with experience in the primary sector. No financial contribution is expected from Willow Bank School.

Impact

The anticipated benefit will be the development of reading with pupils in Year 2 at Willow Bank School.

Pupil Involvement

Between 4 to 6 Sixth Form pupils undertake the activity. They will rotate regularly with other pupils volunteering to help.

Frequency

This is an on-going activity that takes place every week during term time. It will continue for as long as the need exists.
