ibrick workshops

As part of the programme of activities we run for Northern House pupils here at St Edward's, we partnered up with House of Fun who run STEM workshops.

They ran several ibrick sessions at St Edward’s School for the pupils of Northern House who were supported by the St Edward’s Lower 6th pupils. Ibrick Link Education provides fun and interactive STEM education programs which have been proven to stimulate curiosity and creativity.

In the sessions the children created 5 models from lego style bricks that introduced the concept of energy transfer using a transmission, in an interactive and engaging way that linked to real-world mechanical engineering. The children built, tested and innovated their own toothed gears, belt drives and dual transmissions. Models included a wind turbine, race car with gears, dragster car, search and rescue vehicle, and a tank.

Background

St Edward’s School is fortunate to sit across the road from Northern House Academy in North Oxford, Summertown. Northern House Academy is a special school for pupils who have been identified as having Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) difficulties.

St Edward’s School has always had a good relationship with Northern House Academy but over the past year this relationship has expanded and grown resulting in mutual benefits for both parties.

When the Northern House pupils come over to St Edward’s School we put on a variety of crafts, games and activities.

Impact

A Teacher from Northern House commented: ‘The mixture of technical learning, step by step following of instructions and creativity in every session was fantastic for the children. They really look forward to every session’.

Pupil Involvement

Each session had up to 10 Northern House pupils and lower 6th St Edward's students assisted.

Frequency

We will once again be partnering with House of Fun to run the workshops this academic year.
