Hosting Varsity Games (Primary) - Winter + Summer editions
The School works with the Marches Academy Trust Director of Sport, Health & Community to provide a venue for the Trust's 5 primary schools to compete against one another in a range of sports and to try new ones. There are winter and summer editions, targeting different age groups. Overall the shared aim is to foster a love of sport
Aims
The aim is to promote, support and develop sporting activity amongst primary age pupils. We look to foster healthy attitudes to competition. We also seek to give the pupils the opportunity to try new sports, such as Fives and Rowing
Background
The Marches Academy Trust Director of Sport, Health and Community and the School's Head of Partnership & Community Engagement have worked together on a number of projects and this option has been priority
Resources
We use indoor and outdoor facilities - pitches prepared for football, the cricket centre, the astro turf, Five courts, rowing club, swimming pool etc.
Each event requires coordination and support from the Grounds Team and Catering. Specialist sport coaches provide some instruction. Each event is hosted free of charge, including lunch for all participants.
Impact
We have feedback on the day from M.A.T. colleagues and participants, as well as a 'review' afterwards
Pupil Involvement
A number of Shrewsbury School students help to reference where appropriate. These are primarily Sixth Form students
Frequency
This is the third year of Varsity Games. At primary level there are two event per year.
